Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, celebrated the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. It honored WWI veterans and recognized the Germans' armistice, or call for peace, on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." After World War II and the Korean War, veterans service organizations urged the U.S. Congress to amend the holiday to be more inclusive of all veterans. Thus, Veterans Day was officially born in 1954 to honor all American veterans, past and present. President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name.
