CESA 8 staff models hats donated by GBCI

Offenders housed in the mainstream unit at Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) are giving back to their community through a knitting and crocheting service project. Participants create handmade hats that are donated to local children to help keep them warm during Wisconsin’s cold winter months.

In a recent effort, GBCI donated more than 1,000 hats to children throughout the CESA 8 region.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) Opportunities and Options Resource Guide, DOC institutions provide community service opportunities alongside education, vocational training, and reentry planning. This hat-making initiative directly supports the DOC’s goal of offering meaningful, service-oriented activities for persons in its care.

The donation represents not only a contribution to local welfare but also a positive connection between the institution and the broader community.

GBCI is currently accepting donations of yarn to help sustain this impactful project. For more information on the project, please contact jamey.gray@wi.gov.
