"A poem is
the dream of a poet"
-Robert Fender, age 12
Congratulations! You have just been hired as the newest editing team for Chipper's Publishing Company. Our company is considering a new type of publishing:
Children's Poetry Books.
Several teams have been hired to do research and create sample books. Your goal is to produce and present a sample poetry book that will convince the company board members that this is a profitable and worthy endeavor.
The board members are especially interested in new, undiscovered poets. To help convince them that there are lots of new poets, each team member will need to write a poem for the sample book.
"Training for the Mission"
A READER'S SURVEY has shown that the market will buy poems about the following topics. Your collection should be about one of the following categories.
Animals Nature Feelings Holidays
You will find some resource links that will allow you to search the internet for possible poems to be included in your sample book. Only choose poems that fit with the topic that you have chosen to build your collection around.
Your collection should contain 10 - 15 poems that both fit your topic and are of interest to your team. There should be at least one original poem from each team member in your sample book. (Should you discover that you have a very talented poet on your team, you may allow them to submit two poems.)
The board members are partial to colorful, attractively illustrated, well-printed books. You may submit your books as handwritten OR typed, with personally illustrated pictures OR colorful computer graphics. Your sample book must include front and back bindings, and a publications page.

"Let Your Imagination Take You to Create"
You will need to assign each team member a task to be in charge of. Your team should only have 4 member on it. If you should find that we hired an extra member for your team, assign 2 members to a harder task. However, if you should find that your team is short a member then one person should be assigned 2 of the easier tasks.
Click on the diamond to find the four tasks and organize your sparkling team into action.

A
has been prepared by the board to help decide whether or
not your project is of a quality that convinces them to start
publishing children's poetry books. Use this rubric to help
you polish your project to perfection.
You have now completed your sample book and its presentation. If you were successful at finding and creating the poems, you learned how to decide what makes poetry interesting and how collections are put together. You have also discovered how to share your work with others in a convincing manner.
If you would like to expand your knowledge and demonstrate your awesome abilities, get together with a group and determine what other categories of poems students would be interested in. Then write another collection of poems to be published and placed in your school's library. Everyone benefits from reading the writings of others. Your book will be a legacy for other students to enjoy for many years to come!
