Introduction With the new health craze, there has been some pressure put onto local pizza places to improve the nutrition of their pizzas. The federal government is funding a contest to encourage young entrepreneurs to produce a pizza that is not only appealing in appearance and taste, but is nutritious as well. Your class has been given the opportunity to compete with other schools in the nation. The finalist will be provided complete funding to start their own nation-wide chain.

Task Your job will be to research pizzas from two local restaurants and create a graph comparing their nutrition. You will also design a pizza that is nutritious, yet tasty enough to outsell your competitors. As a team, you need to develop a persuasive advertisement to convince the rest of the class that your pizza is the most nutritious. (Taste may also be important!) As part of your public relations, you will also be asked to bring in a sample pizza with your recipe for the rest of the class to taste. The team with the most popular pizza, as decided by a panel of judges in a taste test, will earn government funding to start their own chain of pizza restaurants.

Procedure

1. Click on the pizza slice to open the printable sheet your team will use to compare the nutritional value of pizza from Pizza Hut and Rocky Rococo's.

2. Use the following links to complete the sheet.

Pizza Nutrition

3. Click on the graph to open a printable instruction sheet for making a graph of your info on Excel. Be sure to print a copy of your graph to hand in.

4. You are now ready to plan your own healthy pizza. Use the information in the following link (click on the pyramid ), as well as any other resource you may find, to come up with the ultimate healthy pizza. Your 12" pizza must include at least 3 different ingredients. You will need to hand in a paper in order to justify the ingredients you chose. Your paper should include a paragraph for each ingredient used. In your own words, explain the data collected (nutritional value) and why you chose to include each particular ingredient on your pizza. Attach a printout of the nutritional value found on the internet. Each team is responsible for creating a recipe and a picture of their pizza to be handed in.

5. The next task is to advertise! Your team must design an commercial promoting your pizza. Click on the lady to see the directions and expectations for your commercial. Your teacher will set a date for each team to present their ad.

6. The final task is to make your pizza for the public to sample. Your teacher will select a panel of judges and a date for judging. Points will be earned based on an anonymous ballot. Good luck! (Click on Ed for the ballot)

Conclusion Congratulations on a fantastic competition! Hopefully you have learned a bit about pizza nutrition as well as the math involved in creating a nutritious meal. The pizzas were absolutely delightful! Good luck to the winning team and their endeavor in running a chain of restaurants!!
