Teacher Notes

Worksheet: Since the math worksheet may be overwhelming for some students, it may be helpful to work through the calculations using a different type of pizza (e.g. supreme) with the class. Since there are 4 types of pizzas being compared for calories, students who are comfortable with the math may do the carbo/protein/sugar calculations for the other two (pepperoni and vege) for extra credit.

Graph: As an extension on graphing skills, you may suggest students to do another bar graph, such as comparing nutrients (vitamins, fiber, iron) in a single type of pizza (e.g. cheese) from both Pizza Hut and Rocky's. You may also choose to use a pie graph instead (to keep with the "pizza" theme)

Pizza plan: It is recommended that the groups hand in written copies of their reasons supporting their choices for ingredients. This should be more than a copy of the nutrition information. Students should also consider appearance, taste, and general public acceptance as an ingredient. Students may produce the picture on either paper or computer (an art program).

*Make sure the students are aware that they will be asked to make their actual pizza, so their ingredients need to be realistic and obtainable.

Advertisement: You may want to discuss the properties of a good commercial prior to planning their ads. You may also suggest (if available) that students in a communications or photography class could videotape the commercials. Make sure the students are aware that props are encouraged and can only improve their efforts.

Evaluation: Please feel free to add group / individual evaluations to the rubric. These are often helpful for group project grades.
