Youth Service Learning (YSL) |
|
· Program Description: |
"Service-learning is a teaching strategy that many educators use to motivate students to acquire skills and/or knowledge in just about any curriculum area. A couple of examples of service-learning projects are:
Students in a seventh grade science class are allowed to choose to learn about microorganisms by helping test for bacteria levels in a local stream as a part of a community cleanup effort. Not only do they learn about harmful micro-organisms, but help determine strategies to eliminate them.
Or
In order to help students learn about formal letter writing, a high school business teacher lets the business communications class decide on a charity to support by creating and sending letters to businesses soliciting help in the form of donations.
The Corporation for National Service (a federally backed program) was created to promote and support the use of service-learning. In some years, the Department of Public Instruction has made funds available for local educators to train in the use of service-learning and to run projects.
CESA 8 has a consultant available to present workshops of varying sizes to educators who want to know more about service-learning and how it can be used to improve students’ academic performance. To arrange a presentation, please contact the CESA 8 personnel listed at the bottom of this web page.
